What is LineageOS ?

LineageOS is a free and open-source operating system for set-top boxes, smartphones and tablets, based on the Android mobile platform. It is the successor to the custom CyanogenMod ROM, from which it was bifurcated in December 2016, when Cyanogen Inc. announced that it was ceasing development and discontinued the infrastructure underlying the project. Because Cyanogen Inc. retained the rights to the Cyanogen name, the project renamed the fork as LineageOS.


LineageOS was officially launched on December 24th 2016, with the source code available on GitHub. Since then, the development of LineageOS now covers more than 185 models of phones with over 1.9 million active installations, doubling its user base in February-March 2017.
